Prizm Lens Technology
Oakley Prizm lenses provide peak performance that starts with a razor-sharp focus. Prizm lenses also enhance the human eye’s ability to adapt and see with sharpness. Oakley eyewear also provides stellar protection and comfort.
Oakley combined an understanding of how color vision works with extensive lab and field research to develop lenses that:
- Enhance color and contrast to see in more detail
- Create a more vivid, vibrant world
- Increase depth perception
- Highlight features in the surrounding environment
- Reveal what may not be seen with the naked eye
Oakley Prizm lenses provide optimal vision in a variety of field conditions. They do this by blocking wavelengths along the color spectrum. They also maximize contrast between colors. The result is enhanced vision and reduced eye fatigue.
This contrast enhancement technology resulted in a process that ultimately created lenses that bring out certain colors and minimize others. That process, in general, included:
- Identifying how to filter light based on the human eye’s natural sensitivities.
- Analyzing environments since each has its own visual demands. Doing so leverages specific colors that give important visual cues.
- Manipulating light coming in through lenses to fine-tune it according to an environment’s specific needs.
This technology, along with additional lens features, results in eyewear that allows wearers to see clearly, react faster, and perform with confidence.
Prizm Lens Features
Prizm lenses are made from Plutonite, Oakley’s high purity optical-grade polycarbonate, to protect wearers from fragments that could damage eyes. All lenses also block 100% of UVA, UVB, UVC, and harmful violet-blue light up to 400nm.
Also standard in Oakley Prizm lenses:
- A smudge-free lens coating
- A secure fit even in wet conditions via hydrophilic Unobtainium nose pads
- Advanced backside anti-fog coating
- Front-side hard coating for scratch resistance
Decades of eye research based on color science and an understanding of how the eye works led Oakley engineers to create lenses tuned for specific environments. In fact, the contrast enhancement technology used enhances certain colors. It also minimizes others to create an optimal visual environment.
Prizm Lens Types
Wearers choose Oakley lenses based off of the environment they are going into. Doing so brings sharper visual acuity and enhanced detail recognition. It also improves performance and safety.
There are several different types of Prizm lenses, including:
- Prizm Shooting
- Prizm Maritime
- Prizm Snow
- Prizm Grey
- Prizm Everyday
Developed in conjunction with U.S. Special Operations Forces and the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU), Oakley Prizm shooting lenses are color-tuned specifically for shooting. They boost a shooter’s recognition of targets by blocking background distractions such as dirt, trees and sky.
They also improve a wearer’s ability to see reticle patterns through a scope more clearly. This allows shooters to better determine scale or position when homing in on targets.
Oakley Prizm shooting eyewear includes the TR22 & TR45 lenses. They are available in several styles, including the Oakley SI Tombstone Spoil and Oakley SI Ballistic M Frame 3.0 Hybrid Array.
Requested by Special Operations Forces operating in an open ocean environment, Prizm Maritime eyewear reduces glare and enhances contrast. Styles include SI Speed Jacket Safety Sunglasses and SI Double Edge Sunglasses.
For anyone traversing, navigating, or climbing through alpine environments, Prizm Snow lenses enhance contrast and visibility over a wide range of light conditions. They are available in an array of lenses to allow for options based on light conditions. Styles include the Gascan Sunglasses with Steel Frame and Black Polarized Lens.
Prizm Grey lenses are aesthetically neutral to provide a low-profile appearance while at the same time providing maximum contrast and clarity. They are the authorized lenses for any uniform, law enforcement, or military applications and come in a variety of styles.
In addition to the lenses detailed above, Oakley also offers:
- Prizm Deep Water
- Prizm Shallow Water
- Prizm Golf
- Prizm Road

With ordinary lenses, the world looks flat and dull. With Oakley Prizm lenses, it looks vibrant and vivid.
My son was prescribed O.S. 1/2 D prism. Wondering what the strength of this prizm is? if it is the same “prism” effect or just play on words?
Thank you for your question, Celina.
The Oakley “Prizm” lens is actually a brand name for their “Prizm Lens Technology,” and is not related to lens prescription terms. With that said, Oakley does offer prescriptions with “Prizm” lenses. Let me know if you have any other questions.
I’m am having catarac surgery at this time..Which Prizm lense would be best for everyday use. I live in Arizona
Thank you for your question, Larry.
There isn’t a “best lens color” for post-cataract surgery. However, my personal preference would be a dark brown or bronze lens similar to Oakley’s Prizm Tungsten. The dark brown color is perfect for bright light conditions because it reduces blue light and eye strain. In addition, the brown lens will enhance the color red, which helps with driving because it makes taillights and stoplights stand out. Oakley’s Prizm lenses also block 100% harmful UV light, so if you purchase a different brand, make sure they have UV-blocking lenses.
